WANDERNESS candles remind travelers of their favorite trips and help inspire the next adventure.
Meet WANDERNESS (www.wanderness.co), a candle brand that connects people to the joy of travel through the power of scent. With candles inspired by popular travel destinations like Greece, France, Tokyo and Bali, WANDERNESS wants to help people relive the nostalgia of a favorite vacation. The brand also wants to encourage globetrotters to discover new destinations to add to their bucket lists, like Zanzibar, Thailand, Copenhagen, or Cuba.
Founder Amanda Reid started the brand out of a love of travel and a desire to give back. “Scent is such a powerful connection to memory and place,” says Reid. “Candles are a perfect gift for travelers. They literally brighten your home, aromatherapy can boost your mood, and it’s a joy to daydream about past or future trips.” She says that the travel lockdown during the pandemic gave her the boost to start the business, noting that people were missing travel adventures, and looking for ways to spruce up their homes.
WANDERNESS not only celebrates a love of travel, it gives back to expand the opportunity to go abroad. The brand’s signature social impact program will donate 10% of profits to organizations that help low-income students, especially students of color, get the opportunity to travel. “Travel is transformative, but it’s also very expensive,” says Reid. “Our goal is to make it possible for more young people to have the life-changing experience of traveling abroad and coming home with new perspectives.” Reid credits a college professor with putting her on a path to meaningful travel experiences, which led to journeys in dozens of countries, including serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the High Atlas mountains of Morocco.
Sustainability is also front and center for WANDERNESS. The Vermont-based brand sources candles in New England to support the regional economy and limit its shipping footprint. The candles are made with clean ingredients and poured into reusable or recyclable glass jars with metal lids. WANDERNESS looks for partners that are at least two of the following: woman-owned, Black-owned, social enterprises, focused on sustainability, or local. This approach helped guide the business to work with a Vermont-based, female attorney for formation, a Black-owned (and woman-owned) candle-making business in New England, and co-brand marketing partners like woman-owned, Vermont-based brands Overeasy and Fat Toad Farm. Vermont has a strong community of brands that are focused on the triple bottom line (people, planet, profit), like certified B-Corps Ben & Jerry’s, Burton, SunCommon, and King Arthur Baking. WANDERNESS is proud to be a member of Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility.
WANDERNESS soft-launched at the end of 2020 with fifteen scents, and is adding new destinations all the time. Customer favorites include India (Peaceful Sandalwood & Grounded Musk), Greece (Foloi Oakmoss, Ancient Amber & Sunny Orange), Thailand (Sweet Mango & Coconut Sticky Rice) and Australia (Tingly Eucalyptus & Spiffy Mint). The brand is getting ready to introduce new scents with a focus on Mother’s Day gifts, including London, with a fragrance reminiscent of an English Rose Garden, and Italy, a lemon and mint scented candle.
